SPOILERS: SKT BEAT SAMSUNG; BUT IDK IT WAS SO HYPE LIKE AHHHHHHH
Anyways, I had the opportunity to attend the Finals of the 2016 Worlds Finals at Staples Center on 10/29/2016.
Backstory on how I was able to go: So, the fourth ticket was supposed to be for my friend, Fa’s date, but he couldn’t find one in time. Next in line was for my (#1 & 2 best bae) friend, Michelle, but she ended up moving to San Jose. After was our other friend, Jon, but he didn’t play league at the time and had work. So, next comes me. Andy said “happy late birthday do u wanna go watch worlds with us” :’) unlucky OTL 4th choice…
Back to the story, finding parking took us approximately 1 1/2 hours and it was in some shady parking structure.
We walked for 15 minutes before arriving at the LA Convention Center where there was Comi-kaze & the Staples Center where Worlds was being held.
It was super crowded but getting inside was super easy, especially since we had our tickets on hand with us.
Finding our seats was a different story. We went the long way and went around the whole floor [in a circle] before entering a random door & an usher telling us we’re in the wrong section. We finally made our long journey around and found our seats up near the front of the stage (row 4!).
Don’t let “row 4” fool you. Yes, they were close, but we were actually in the middle of the two teams and had to look up at a god-forsaken angle to see the screens. We also barely made it on time for the opening ceremony to begin.
I’m really sad that the free version of WordPress doesn’t allow videos because Zedd performed the 2016 Worlds [theme] song with lights and special effects; it was so cool.
(oh, found a link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4BaD7Ny-wQ // mv: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zasx9hjo4WY (there are a lot of references to veteran players and “inside jokes” in the mv))
There were player/team introductions soon after: SKT T1 on the red side (away from us) & Samsung Galaxy on the blue side (closer to us).
Finals format is set in a best-of-5 and, fun fact, this year’s Worlds was the first one to have the tournament go to all 5 games. They were amazing & intense a’f to the point where you can feel (& almost empathize) the frustrations/joys from the players after a crucial loss/win.
Here’s the orchestra + analysts + casters on the side over there, along with some player cams on the screens above.
The games would go back & forth with the wins with the first 2 or 3 being boringly one-sided, but after those games came the intense, “one mistake can cost the game for either team,” close games.
SKT T1 are your first 3 time World Champions!!! woooooo!!!
The ceremonial trophy lifting + each player & coach(es) were awarded medals. Soon after, photographers came to take their photos and Eefje “Sjokz” Depoortere, Danish analyst and esports figure (and very pretty imo), came to the stage to interview League’s renowned Lee “Faker” Sanghyeok.
(ok mini rant. I understand that faker is faker and did faker things but honestly bengi deserved the mvp title. i mean, they won the games that he played in, minus one. and it’s just the things he did and just ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.)
At this point, the camera was going around the audience & us being in the front got a decent amount of camera time… Our friends all messaged us screenshots & tagged us in photos during the time. :’)
Before we knew it, the stage was getting cleared out and the crowds have long-since dispersed.
The majority came in expecting SKT to take the trophy home, came not expecting much out of this series. (No really, a huge amount of people actually left after game 2 because it seemed like SKT was going to sweep.) But everyone left with an unprecedented respect for Samsung Galaxy. I mean, there were more “SSG! SSG! SSG!” chants than “SKT! SKT! SKT” chants at a certain point.
